The UK has one of the most complex tax systems in the world and while no-one these days can profess to be an all-round expert, my specialisms and experience encompass a very broad range of tax issues over a 30+ year period. I don’t have have the answer to every question at my fingertips but in any case relying on one’s memory of how a particular tax rule works is not a good idea.
Giving off the cuff advice on tax issues especially where complex rules are involved can be dangerous and my approach is that, however well I may think I know a particular situation from past researches/experience I try to approach from a position of advising from scratch. So that means going back and studying the legislation and any relevant case law, HMRC guidance and professional publications, because every situation is different in some way and of course tax law and its interpretation is constantly changing.
